Over the past few years style and clothing has become more gender fluid, with guys wearing dresses and more feminine clothing. However guys painting their nails is nothing new. Men have been painting their nails since around 3,200 B.C. to show social and economic class. If we have been doing it for so long, why is it frowned upon by many today?
Many people see men painting their nails as girly and it doesn’t make you a man. I see where they are coming from. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and if they don’t like painting their nails that’s fine, but where it crosses the line is when people put men down and say their opinion is invalid just because of their nails.
Davis High senior, Kalen Cox says “I’m not one to paint my nails, but I have no problem with other guys who do. I respect them.”
Many guys and girls see men painting their nails as a sign of weakness. Personally I paint my nails because I like how it looks and I like matching my outfits and things to them. Not everyone has to like it and that is okay because I respect their opinion.
Painting your nails can also show support too. A few years ago lots of male celebrities, such as Zac Efron and Chris Hemsworth painted their nails red to show support for the Polished Man Project. Raising awareness for the one in five children who experience physical or sexual assault and violence before the age of 18.
Due to the popularity of these celebrities and the shocking choice of nail color, they raised tons of money and awareness for the foundation.
At the end of the day we should accept people for who they are and let them like what they like without judging or persecution.
